One a state; one a state of mind.

The first time I saw Virginia I was wearing my little sailor suit,
Assigned to NATO Headquarters at the Norfolk Naval Station.
Once Settled in the first thing I did was write a letter to Ginny
Just to let her know I had arrived safely so she wouldn’t worry.

The last time I saw Virginia my tour of duty had ended
And I was headed west back to my Indiana home and Ginny.
The Shenandoahs were nice but I missed the old home place and
The girl I hoped to settle down with when I got back.

The first time I saw Virginia she was waiting tables
At the truck stop on the highway near my home town.
A pretty little thing as she flitted back and forth
Smiling at the local sailor home on leave.

The last time I saw Virginia she had turned her back on me
And was walking away for the very last time.
I asked her to be mine but someone else had won her heart.
Two Virginias–both tucked away inside my memory.

Oh! That is so sad, but you have your memories.

You might have lost her heart but you are still here today. She’s not the only one out here. There’s more fish in the sea.

You are one of the few writers on this site that can genuinely tug at my heart-strings with their work.
