Red crabs trek to from Christmas Island to the Indian Ocean to give birth and in the process many of the young may lose their lives.
Red crabs are everywhere
On Christmas Island
And near the Indian Ocean
The crabs must return
So that their young
Are hatched
- – -
Their progress are always impeded
By marauding ants that are looking
For a feast
That leave many of them helpless
- – -
The females lead the way
They cross long stretches
Of forest, land and roads
For their trek to be a success
They are followed shortly
By the males
- – -
While in the ocean
The males unite with the females
Trek back to the forest
To produce their eggs
- – -
Their journey to the water
Is to release their offspring
Many of whom may die
Depending on the currents
In the ocean
For some are swept away
And may actually drown
- – -
Many millions will survive
Since there are tens of millions
That converge over the beach
On the way to the Indian Ocean
