A sestina I wrote for April PAD. Just four more to go!
Assistant and I take Amtrak to DC to seek liberation.
One day, I vow to breathe last breath while seeking someone’s freedom.
I must focus on bending to fit into bathroom too small for wheelchair, assistant, and body
at once. After several tense minutes, I succeed, and hope that this will be the singular time
on this journey I’ll need to repeat such a crazy occurrence
but three-fourths of the way to DC my bladder beckoned again and made me a liar.
Sunday, I roll 20 laps; hoping my sponsors will pay and not make me a sweaty, overheated liar.
Bathroom fall, directly onto nonexistent kneecap, threatens to my seeking of gimp liberation.
but I vow to overcome occurrence
and continue fighting physical pain for freedom.
After all, it’s less than 120 hours of time
until I can go home; then I’ll rest and ice the body.
My 24th arrest for being handcuffed to the White House gate is good for this aching body.
Before arrests, the blogosphere reported of our chanting “Shame on you, Obama is a liar!”
I am one annoyed Obama girl, wanting back both donated money and time.
I actually believed him when he said he supported our liberation
and voted, as always, in support of freedom.
My organizer’s soul is betrayed by this occurrence.
We blockaded Constitution Avenue and refused to move. This arrest was more of an occurrence.
Eleven hours, in an unused House of Representative Chamber, freezing and starving the body
in pursuit of freedom.
We must hold our President accountable to his organizer roots, rather than turncoat liar
he’s become since taking office, if those of us who need homecare will ever truly find liberation.
I feel, as I do my fellow arrestees, that now is the time.
Our release takes more time
than is usual for this occurrence
but it’s worth it if we can secure even one more person’s liberation.
By the time we reach the hotel all my body
wants is bed, despite the cheering of comrades at our return. Small price for calling a liar a liar;
small price to pay for freedom.
Dancing preserves for a few extra moments the freedom
granted by five days bone wearing advocacy and personal bonding time.
We have collectively called out our President as an organizer turned politically motivated liar,
the latest occurrence
of some politician’s lies to our subculture’s political body,
as if their falsehoods will stop our search for liberation.
Trip over… Freedom pursued, but as yet a non-granted occurrence.
For a time, my advocacy work is done and I’m going home to heal my body.
Thinking, “President Obama you may be a liar, but you will not stop us from finding liberation.”
