“My body is so heavy
Could it be this easy?
There is rest in death
Rest….”
With only those few faded words
Carved upon rough granite
I have nothing to keep you close…
Something to remember this day by,
So even in future, if we ever part,
When we return to this beach,
We’ll never forget that we’ve met before.
Never forget
Even for a moment,
Keep my face deeply engraved
With in your heart
Try to inhale all the peace of the sea
Air and exhale all troubles along with it.
If only troubles could be expelled that easily.
I wouldn’t be here,
Drifting farther below the surface
Every second my lungs don’t rise or fall.
How long ago was it?
Since I brushed my lips against
The silky locks of your coal hair.
Since you gave me your hand
And released all the turmoil with in your heart?
I’ve become tired,
I’ve pushed my body too far.
And after all of this…
I still never made it to my goal,
Your embrace, your brilliant smile.
Yet, the secret lies in my arms
Where only you can hear
No one else will know
The warmth of your smile is an embrace.
One final time I’ll reach out for you,
Bring one hand up to ruffle your unruly locks
I was everything you needed right then,
And if I were to go now,
At least you’ve had today.
Turning to face the sea,
he sat himself down next to the inscriptions
As he assumed the same stance that he did ten years ago.
With only these few faded words
Carved upon rough granite
I have nothing to keep you close…
Turning his face towards the breeze,
he took a deep breath, trying to inhale all the peace of the sea air
And exhale all troubles along with it.
As waves crashed to the shore
he thought he saw a familiar face beneath the surface.
“Familiar face” he sighed
And traced the few simple words upon
The rock, carved so many years ago.
“Lovers live, and lovers die
But love lasts forever.”
he closed his eyes
And let the wind whisper an answer
“There is rest in death……rest.”
