A letter to my stillborn brother

If you were here today
What would your life be like?
Would you have a college degree?
Or be living the life of a bum
Would you have a Kiwi wife?
Might I be a doting aunt with kids of my own?
Who would your best friend be?
What interests and hobbies would you pursue?
Would your favorite animal be a wild one?
Or a domestic pet
Would your favorite color be a pastel like mine?
There are so many to choose from
What about your working life
Perhaps you would have worked alongside dad
On the railway
Your eyes
Brown; like your sister Bethne and me
Or blue, green or hazel
I wonder
I always think about you little brother
Even though it is forty-one years
Since you were stillborn.
You’ll remain forever in my heart
I LOVE YOU
