A true event from May 2008. As a novice kayaker I ventured into stormy waters off of Provincetown, MA on a cold blustery Sunday morning. The poem needs work, but I hope you enjoy it.
Menacing clouds gathered in the west,
Wind whipped waves flashed their white.
To kayak that day would require my best,
It was my third time ever, and oh what a sight.
The horizon obscured, the sky was so dark,
When I set out to sea it was kayak and I.
Yet no fear, so on the journey I embarked,
In no time at all light flashed the black sky.
Soon the land was distant to me,
Surrounded by rough ocean, birds, and oh my.
In the distant something glorious I did see,
Whales shot waterspouts far into the sky.
While the storm said retreat my mind said go on,
Go to the birds , for the sea they know so well.
Humpback whales in the misty morning dawn,
Watching them that day, I fell into a spell.
Toward the gulls I paddled, shore far behind,
They only would gather if bellies would fill.
My kayak would float even if I paid it no mind,
No matter what happened it would be a thrill.
I let my orange kayak, mere inches above sea,
Float freely then, all so superb.
Spectacular visions filled me,
With nature’s finest: undisturbed.
Black nose arose from sea to my right,
Brushing my transport with no ill intention.
Large eye surfaced and gave me no fright,
No need to paddle, no circumvention.
The Right whale arose, towering above,
Then bowed and nosedived straight down beside.
Instinct was to grab fin and sail like a dove,
Only under water, go with the tide.
Covered in barnacles, yet beauty intense,
Right whale submerged, leaving water so still.
My partner would ask: Did you lose all your sense?
But oh such a rush: a monumental thrill.
Now to find shore and safety once more,
Seas whipped waves in mountains so high.
Which direction to face, what was in store?
Lose focus now, and it would be goodbye.
Two dolphins came out and pointed the way,
They seemed to know and stayed with me a bit.
Beach appeared and my friends left to play,
I thanked my angles and then I did split!
