What if Romeo, the ultimate romantic, had a mistress?
(Experimenting with different forms; I believe this is called a news ballad.)
There once was a boy and girl this is true,
She liked him a lot, this also is too,
But one day her prince just up and away,
And left her alone, one Valentine’s Day.
This is Romeo and his paramour,
A love that lay hidden, under floorboards.
She has no place in the story of old,
Now left wondering how men are so cold.
Read on to discover the tragic tale;
Guarding her heart as if it were a jail,
The shadow mistress of a golden boy
Will spill her heart with no need to be coy.
“I always knew that was what I would be,
The other woman, the one we envy.
I never knew it would end up like this,
My love for Romeo, sealed with death’s kiss.”
With those words and a tear, she shares her fate
On a lonely and cold December date:
How could there be another Juliet?
“There can’t,” She says, “And that’s why I was left.”
It all started on a warm summer’s night,
Talking and flirting by the firelight.
Talking to him soon lead to other things,
And she’d lie to say she thought she could win.
Romeo was always a gentleman,
Their time together slipped through fists like sand,
And though she thought it would last forever,
They would wind up together for never.
It started out great, but then it grew sour;
Blooming, then wilting, a delicate flower.
Her one mistake was all it ever took,
Just asking for love, she wound up forsook.
Late night phone calls and their dirty secret,
Now Juliet’s dead, but what does she get?
The satisfaction of knowing she sold out
And eyes that are dry as a water spout.
Who could have known it’d crash and burn so fast-
Our mystery woman who thought she’d last?
Can it be love when it’s all just a game?
Now they’re both gone and she’s going insane.
The shadow woman is going to crack,
With the twin daggers both stabbed in her back.
Who would have known Juliet was her friend,
That she betrayed for a world of pretend?
