Rosie and Lila a poem by Jennifer Jo Fay. A poem about little girls busy in the garden. A poem about sweet little girls and a mother who loves them.
Rosie and Lila
Pristine petals grace the delicate
peach pink rose,
as the dark, green leaves dance
in the gentleness of the wind.
Flowers spread across the field
as Rosie digs in her garden.
Rosie has strawberry blonde hair that
is tied back in a pink bow,
lovingly fixed by her beautiful mother.
She wears a calico dress
that was sewn by motherly hands,
and she wears a green sun hat
with a pink ribbon that dangles by her
hair.
Mother kneels nearby,
planting strawberrie plants to harvest
next year. She looks up at Rosie
and her other daughter Lila.
Lila is sitting cross legged at the top
of the garden. She is playing with
a daisy. Lila has brown hair
that is done up in two braids.
Mother admires the beauty of her two daughters.
She is proud to have two little girls
to call her own.
Yet, she is somewhat sad
that someday they will grow up
and leave her well crafted nest.
But, for now, Mother is content
to watch and listen to little beauties.
Rosie sings a sweet melody as she plants
her petunias.
Lila is busy plucking the white, silken petals
off the daisy. She is singing, “He loves me,
he loves me not,
he loves me.”
And Yankee Doodle Dandy
sifts loudly from Rosie’s pink lips.
