A sheepdog who never worked, never even saw a sheep, but used her herding instinct to good effect on her owner and all her visitors.

Her parents may have worked but she
Enjoys a life of luxury.
No matted muddy coat for her
But brushed and clean and glossy fur.
She can’t herd sheep into a pen
But knows the way to handle men.
Visitors will, one and all,
Fall victim to her game of ball.
She “drives” her master from his chair
To exercise and breathe fresh air,
But as she runs there rises deep
The need to fetch the shepherd’s sheep.
As ancient instinct fills her head
She brings him sticks and stones instead.

We nearly adopted a Border Collie last weekend, but we don’t have a fence yet, and we have a busy road out front.

They need a lot of exercise and also stimulation – if they are not working dogs – because they are extremely intelligent. Wonderful companions. Best to wait until you have a fence and get a puppy if you can because they need early training.
