This is a poem about someone who has been dominated and treated cruelly by another human being such as a sadistic school teacher, a controlling partner, a competitive sibling or an abusive parent. The poem also personifies retribution, warning the culprit that what goes around comes around, and that whether his victim’s resentment is active or not, we all get our commeuppance in the end.
Rulers
I’ll sit by my window
And rule out a line
On my map of wild vengeance
Mixed up with red wine.
You ruled without conscience.
You sent me away -
But I’m ruling a trap,
And I’ll get you one day.
I’ve chewed bitter tablets
To ease off the tears,
But I’ve borne so much sorrow
And have waited for years.
So rule through your guilt -
But you’ll never excel,
For I’ll be right behind you,
And I’ll meet you in hell.
