This was written as a gift to an Eastern Star Matron and Patron and presented to them by my parents after their year of leading the chapter. Eastern Star is a religion-based organization (associated with the Freemasons). The "theme" for this Matron and Patron (they choose a theme each year) was, of course, "Sails and Anchors." I worked with imagery within that theme to create this piece.
once dreamed of white sails
and unmet faces,
of whisking away to
exotic new places,
of exciting adventures,
untold things to do,
but I discovered my greatest
adventure was you.
You see, life is like sailing;
It includes toil and work
while bobbing along
through your life like a cork
on a wide open sea
while finding your way.
Yet it matters most who’s with you
at the end of the day.
A shipmate, a soulmate,
a friend to help bear
the brunt of a storm
and with laughter to share
the warmth of the sunshine
and the mysteries of night.
A partner through saddness
who can make things all right.
Enjoying fair winds
and a following sea
would not be as joyful
were you not with me
to share in the good times
and help in the bad.
I now truly realise
the treasure I’ve had.
Sailing in darkness
toward Eastern light;
stars above to guide us,
steadfast friends in the night.
Whatever the dangers –
trouble come what may –
they’ll see us through safely
’til the dawn of the day.
And when our eyes gaze
on that long distant shore
and we hear family calling,
to join them once more,
we’ll know that no more
on the sea shall we roam,
for the greatest of Anchors
will have called us all home.
