Sometimes too many friends can be toxic. It is better to have one true friend, than to have a gang of fakers.

I’ve got to get rid of the clutter,
before I wind up in the gutter.
So many friends, I can’t keep
count. I can’t remember who
said what or when.

Personality clashing all
over the place. Some got grace,
but some….I just need my space!
I’ve got to slow my pace.

Caller ID and I are close.
Most just want to boast,
about some trivialities that
I can’t fix and they won’t quit.

No one is to blame for this mess,
I just got too many friends, that’s
not my best.

I’ve been told, that I only need one,
to watch my back, and I watch theirs.
If there are too many, you can’t keep
track. I just want my sanity back.

I know it’s going to hurt,
and some may even sling dirt.
I won’t be popular, but at
least I’ll be free of the drama
that now surrounds me.

Making the choice won’t be hard,
I already know whom I should discard.
The users and the loser are definitely out.
The whiners and boaster are now coasters.

Now, it’s just you and me,
and a few maybes. I need to keep track,
‘cause I just want my sanity back.

I agree to many friends can lead to problems, especially if they like to gossip. Lots of friends don’t have to be bad, however sometimes I see what you mean.

I do know a lot of people but I only have a few friends myself. And I also believe in keeping your friends close and your enemies closer….

  • Kate Smedley on Jan 23, 2009

I’m lucky to have one true friend who is like a sister to me, you are so right in what you say. It’s when times get tough that you find out who your friends are. I like this poem, thank you.

  • Anne Lyken Garner on Jan 24, 2009

An interesting premise for a poem. I thought that there were some pacing issue in some places, but overall, a thougtful project.

  • leannehume on Jan 24, 2009

Nice poem, and I have to agree with you. Lots can go wrong when you have so many you call “friends”. Friends are great but know which are true, they are the ones who lift you up.
    Keep writing!

Been here a lot. Sounds like you just need some space. No answering phone calls, quiet nature walk, hot tea, hot bath, peaceful music, peaceful thoughts. Perhaps that may help or like you said…get rid of a few.

    Liked your poem.
Insanity can be a good thing…turns a blank piece of paper into a work of art.

Just like it came in your mind and out it flowed, beautifully and with grace.

This is the art of writing, a masterpiece!

Well, i hope that your on track and that your sanity is back (lol) It can be a loney road with all those pack rats. All they do is nip at your toes. Girl, did ya hear about this? Did ya see who said that? Oh my goodness, STOP that!!!! That one friend will have your back. Nice poem…mom

Loved reading this and I can very well relate. I enjoyed the part that says:
The users and the losers are definitely out.
The whiners and boaster are now coasters.

Keeping track of lists of friends are hard, and honestly i’m not the type to keep in contact with my friends, but it doesn’t mean i don’t care for them.

Like you said, its better to have a few good friends than a bunch of fakers. True enough, but its also good to keep your arms open to embrace people.

Because who knows, some of the passer bys you let in might just be the one you’re looking for :)

    Cheers~

I think this is more of a girl thing. Most Guys usually have a handful of friends and know which ones are true to the end. Nice article

  • RoseSmith on Mar 9, 2009

I like this one a lot. How many of us can identify with this one. Too much of anything usually means trouble, and too many friends can surely reek havoc on relationships. Nice

  • Pushing40 on Mar 25, 2009

How painful this poem is. Heartbreaking to think of anyone in some much pain. Great capture of emotions.

  • sincereone on May 12, 2009

I am so there. I have lost my mind so many time trying to please all of my friends. I need to get my sanity back….. Thank you for writing this, for me!

  • stillovingu on May 13, 2009

It is always nice to find your way back to sanity. Nice one.
