This poem describes the great transaction that occurred when Jesus died on the cross.
The holy God of heaven gave
To man His perfect Law
And the Judge shall not find guiltless
One single crime He saw
This mirror of His righteousness
Reveals my life of shame
A worm who lusted, lied and stole
And blasphemed God’s precious Name
In filthy rags, depraved I crawled,
His wretched enemy
Chief of sinners, child of wrath
Deserving hell are we
Yet in my helpless, vile state
God’s rich mercy here was shown
Purely for His pleasure and glory
He chose me for His Own
But Who must give what the law requires?
Who must die the death I dread?
Who must be wounded for my transgressions?
Who must suffer in my stead?
The Father poured out His wrath on the Son
To be our propitiation
We’re ransomed by the Spotless Lamb
Given for our salvation
Once for all was His sacrifice
All other offerings ceased
It is finished, the curtain torn
The Lord is our Great High Priest
In His Body He bore my sins
This criminal goes free
Christ paid my fine with His life’s blood
And nailed it to the tree
His Obedience and Righteousness
Is imputed now to us
We’re reconciled, seen as saints
For the sake of the risen Jesus
Repent and trust in His great work
Rest in Him Who took your place
For eternity exalt His Name
And praise His glorious grace
By faith alone I’m justified
Through the wounds on His feet, side and wrist
My only boast, the cross of Christ
Where Justice and Mercy have kissed
