A vision of loveliness in flight.
On a bright October day
Upon a park’s green grass I lay
Gazing up at the sky, so blue!
My sight reached far and true
Lo, against the azure glaze
Came seagulls drifting, white wings ablaze
And several began to circle and dip
Close at first, then away they would trip
Joined by one, then by ten, then a hundred they flew
Strange patterns to a rhythm only they knew
A dozen made circles a hundred would fly through
Figure-eight’s and spirals of white, cutting through the blue
A thousand gulls, dancing high!
A hundred different dances in the sky
One through another, flying around
Merging and cascading high above the ground
Pouring white diamonds, swirling through space
First slow, then fast, changing their pace
They shone like stars that came down to play
Running far from the night to dance in the day
Spinning so crazily on that golden day
They lifted up so slowly, up and away
Till at last they merged with the light of the sky
I watched with wondrous joy
As the seagulls danced the summer goodbye
