Rekindling a love from the past, giving second chances because it is worth it.

I dreamed a dream the other night,
that spoke volumes to me
and left me haggard and trite.
I can’t believe how long it has been.
I want to see you again.
We were just in our teens
going steady.
We thought we were ready,
but we didn’t have a clue
about what to do,
nor the complications it could bring
leading to fling after fling.
Our love ended on one summer day,
We said all that we needed to say
and then we walked away,
regretting the part that we each played.
You ended up moving
to another town,
after breaking down
everything that used to matter,
and leaving me to more or less drown
in my own self pity.
I ended up in another city.
My heart eventually healed,
though I still thought of you from time to time,
with the memory always lagging behind.
The dream made you real to me again,
and caused me to wonder
where you’ve been.
I did some checking and found your number.
I hesitated, but decided to call.
I did things just to stall,
but did get the courage to call after-all.
Thoughts kept running through my mind.
“What if he is married and she answers?” or”what if he has a girlfriend?”
He answers with a hello,
actually more like a bellow,
which was typical of him.
I almost didn’t say anything, but I did.
I told him who I was,
and he said that he had a kid,
but no girlfriend or wife.
Said he had had an okay life.
Had thought of me once or twice, and kind of laughed.
We decided to get together
to talk about old times
and re-experience what we left behind.
Such a time of rhyme,
when love was so innocent and pure
and love was so sure.
We laughed and laughed,
and I became daft
like old times.
It was like we hadn’t missed a day.
I missed the way we used to play.
We had such a connection of rekindled interest,
that we decided to keep in touch from here on out.
It is worth the effort for second chances, and that is what life is all about.
