A poem About My City Detroit, MI.

One shot ten years+ ago
Changed life’s path
This constant downward spiral
Immense pain second only to seizure driven blindness
A constant reminder of destruction and hate
You see where I’m from violence is the norm
You are more likely to be gunned down than to graduate high school
Innocent blood spilled over nothing
In a city born into nothingness
My city… Detroit City
Murder glorified
Last summer I heard something that unfortunately made me feel safe
In Indianapolis there were 53 murders this summer
But in my city… Detroit city no matter the season
53 murders a week is a good week
For years I didn’t notice
Impervious to global statistics
My city granted the title the murder capital
A title held high as if worthy of some trophy
Till one shot ten+ years ago
Opened my eyes to my city’s constant downward spiral
October 4, 1999
One shot, one head, one life… My life
One man, one gun, one bullet
Changed my path
Causing this constant downward spiral
Immense pain second only to seizure driven blindness
Would be worth it all if my city… Detroit city
Would open its eyes and finally decide to change!
