They say sharks can smell blood in the water from miles away. I think the same can be said of men when it comes to the end of a relationship that involves the girl they wanted but never thought they would get the chance to have. They suddenly find the courage to come in closer, circling, waiting to move in for the kill.

I wonder if they smell the blood
In the water I’ve been drowning in
Circling, knowing my life is nearly over
With you – how long have they waited
Now emboldened daring to approach
To sneak a glimpse, catch the scent
Of a woman scorned
Once entrapped in your net of lies
Having clawed her way free
Swimming closer, dazzled by the shimmering scales
Covering the mermaid’s delicate flesh
Now scarred from years of struggle
Inside the seine of a loveless covenant
Yearning to touch, to nibble
That which you found so distasteful
Only fit to ensnare and flaunt before them
How long now ’til they devour me?
