A dog’s devotion to his owner.

You watch over me unconditionally
Your years you have devoted to me
A friend, confidant and companion you came to be
Neither one of us could have known what fate had planned for the night
A night like any other night, lights off and doors locked tight
You lay at my side as I stroke your back; we both drift into sweet slumber
I am startled by a crash as loud as thunder
Screams and yelps bellow out from below
You are not at my side and my fear grows
I rush down stairs and my heart stops
In shards of glass to my knees I drop
There you are my friend, your coat covered in blood
From my eyes the tears begin to flood
I hold you as your last breath fades away
As quickly as you came in to my life to stay
I am empty hearted
Suddenly I am alone
Then I see a madman lying in the floor prone
He breathes no air
How life can be so unfair
Your life you gave for me
If it were not for you I would be
My friend my silent keeper
