An ode to black women everywhere. You are like no other creature on the face of this planet.

Sistah girlfriend, you walk in beauty
Ageless beauty like the seven wonders
Of the world
No precious gem can match
The sparkle in your eyes
No bloom in nature compares to you
The flowers envy your many hues
Smooth dark chocolate; cafe-au-lait
When you walk down the street
Head held high
The world is awe-struck;
Tho’ they try to hide it
Full lips, just right for kissing
Round hips swaying to the rhythm of life
Your dress may have cost you
Twenty bucks
But your elegance and attitude
Makes it look like a million
You have a style all your own
Sistah girlfriend, you are strong
Mountains may crumble and utterly fall
But you… girl, you are a rock
The glue that holds everything together
Family, friends, church
A snap of your neck; a click of your tongue
And folks know you won’t stand for no mess
Your tears are not a sign that you have given up
They wash away the pain of today
That you may face tomorrow’s storms
All in gazelle-like stride
Sistah girlfriend, you are ALL that
Strong, beautiful, classy, confident
Doesn’t matter if you’re in the boardroom
Or the neighborhood beauty parlor
You can weave yourself, seamlessly
Into any walk of life
Stand up and let the world take notice
Like no other creature on the face of the planet
You’ve got it going on!

I wanted to expressly address the beauty of all skin tones of my race. There has been, since the days of slavery, an animosity between light-skinned and dark-skinned blacks. This has been further perpetuated by many years of the media feeding us their idea of what beauty is (blond hair, blue eyes, reed thin) – giving some light-skinned black women an air of superiority over their dark-skinned sisters (read, the lighter the better). It’s gotten better over the years, but the myth is still perpetuated in some circles.

Now, all may not agree,(SMILE), but I find myself to be fairly attractive. But all through my teen years, and into early adulthood, I found myself passed over by boys/men for lighter skinned girls with longer hair. I had a complex for a long time that, just within the last 10 years or so, I’ve gotten over.

Hope this gives you some better insight into why I needed to write this one.
