Our country has been hit by the worst November snow for seventeen years and it’s freezing out there.

It’s only November and it’s glacial outside.

The snow’s falling heavily and won’t be denied.

The whole of Great Britain is in the throes of a freeze

And the icy conditions we cannot appease.

Our little back garden is a picturesque scene,

The virgin white snow no human has seen.

The last blooms of summer droop under the weight

Of the deluge of snow which has fallen of late.

A frog and an owl both made out of stone

Peek out from their blanket at whiteness unknown.

The little garden gnome looks quite alarmed

The snow does nothing to make him feel charmed.

A gull calls out from a rooftop close by

It’s a wonder that in snow he even can fly,

And out in the street children gleefully play

With shrieks of delight as they’re pulled on their sleigh.

I do like the snow when I’m all snug and warm

Sitting by the coal fire away from the storm,

But tomorrow I have so many things I must do

And if I can’t get out I will be in a stew.

I’ve promises to keep and people to see

And a visit to my sons for a shopping spree.

I do hope the weather will soon take a break

And clear up overnight so my trip I can take.

I haven’t personally witness that spectacle since mine is a tropical country. Anyway, I’m glad that you share to me this information.

We got our first real snowfall the day after Thanksgiving which is incredibly late for where I live…but I don’t mind a bit.

  • Brewed Coffee on Nov 30, 2010

The snow is lovely to look at when you’re in the comfort and warmth of home. I suppose it’s a different story when you have to battle the cold outside. I do hope it clears overnight so you can enjoy shopping with your sons :-)

  • Poetic Enigma on Nov 30, 2010

Sounds like what we’ve gone through here too, so much snow and so freezing. You shared your feelings very well in this poem!
    Thank you for sharing

  • J M Lennox on Nov 30, 2010

Oh my goodness. You certainly have a challenge for anything you have to do outside of home. Have you stocked up? I have never experienced weather like that before, living in Australia, but I agree with your words that it would be nice if you could stay warm and cozy inside. Thanks for showing us what it is like with both the photos and through your words. Take care!

    Beautifully worded Christine!
Beautiful photos as well. I love the one of the frog peaking out through the snow.
We haven’t been hit yet, very late for us. We usually get a good dumping of snow by this time.

  • lillyrose on Nov 30, 2010

I don’t think you will be taking your shopping trip any time soon, just do it on the internet! I love the snow, have just been out for 2 hours with the dogs, they love it too. Keep warm Christine x

Oh Christine you just beat me, I was in the troughs of my snow poem I have just put the last dot, on the last line, and popped over to Triond to see what,s new and there you have it, your poem is great, you beat me again.

I love your style, its almost as if you have written a letter to a friend but in rhyme.

I hope it clears up for your shopping trip tomorrow.

  • Starpisces on Nov 30, 2010

wow, so lovely. My brother said once he was oversea at a place with snow, saw a woman too excited to see so much snow and she put some on her face and got burnt.

  • Ryan Bataille on Nov 30, 2010

Yes, Christine, it is the season for snow and trying to stay warm and cozy inside. Reading the comments, I’ve come to realize that snow is one of those things that you take for granted when you live with it some months of your life every year. Many have never seen snow before and would appreciate being able to experience it, but for those of us who live it week after week, we fail to see the beauty and wonder of it very quickly!

  • PR Mace on Nov 30, 2010

Snow has a way of messing up our plans. Here we are having rain with a cold front on the way. But no snow for Florida.

  • LoveDoctor on Nov 30, 2010

A lovely poem Christine. Wow! So much snow. Stay warm cozy by the fire. Is that your car covered up in snow? Amazing pictures too. I’ve only seen snow once in NewYork in Central Park years ago when I went on vacation, but nothing compared to this.

Does it snow all that much? Thanks God, it doesn’t snow as much where I live. But It snows a lot about 150 Km from my place. Take care.

  • jimbob1 on Nov 30, 2010

CR…I can identify…I had to shovel a two-foot drift from in front of my door to get in the house last night and had to go out and shovel it away again this morning…we\’ve only had snow for about 10 days and I\’m running out of room to throw it already and we have only just started!!! hope yours clears up shortly…I like this tremendous winter work and voted to say so…thanks and take care

  • Lady Sunshine on Nov 30, 2010

So much snow indeed! You charm with your words, Christine. Your pics compliment your piece perfectly.

  • M J katz on Nov 30, 2010

Hi Christine; I really enjoyed your poem and the pictures! I could almost feel the biting chill! :)
Even though it has been cold here, I am so thankful that we will not have to deal with having to shovel snow again this winter like we had to for the past three in Nebraska! And no frozen fingers and toes anymore, also. :)
I may love the way snow looks as the flakes drift down, turning everything a pristine white but after having to shovel out the truck so many times last year, I will settle for looking at snow through Christmas Cards! Lol!

  • Ukrainian on Nov 30, 2010

Like you, I like staying in the warm house watching snow through the window. :-)

  • crisdiwata on Nov 30, 2010

Wow! nice pictures. It always amaze me to see pictures of snow because we don’t have it here in our country. But I guess it’s not that delightful if you are stuck because of it. I hope the weather will be better soon so you can go shopping in time for the holidays.

  • Anuradha Ramkumar on Dec 1, 2010

    I think it’s very cold…coz I haven’t experienced it.

  • papaleng on Dec 1, 2010

another beautifully-crafted poem, Christine. By looking at the pictures, I believe it\’s really cold at your place. w

  • Christine Ramsay on Dec 1, 2010

Thank you everyone. Unfortunately another dumping of snow overnight has put my trip off until next week. I hope the weather will have improved by then.

We’ve been having a lot of snow here too and I am not pleased. I mean I would be if I knew I didn’t have to do things in it. Like you pointed out. ^_^

  • Agnes Chin on Dec 1, 2010

I like snow but the coldness is just too much for me to bear. Snow over is going to be a mess, got to get your snow booths ready to avoid fall..keep warm and take care always.!

I can’t imagine anything like this! It is so beautiful, but I can see snow has its drawbacks. We live in two different parts of the world – here in New Zealand we had our hottest November for a long time.

  • CA Johnson on Dec 1, 2010

Your poem was great. The temps were high here in New Jersey. It is going to be in the 60s this week. I think it is going to be a warm winter.

  • Ruby Hawk on Dec 1, 2010

Christine, your snow is beautiful from this distance but I hope you keep in in England. I don’t want any in Georgia.

  • sandcastle on Dec 2, 2010

Lovely poem. I love that you did not only describe the beauty of snow but letting your readers know the effect of the snow in your day to day living, too.

  • margaridab on Dec 2, 2010

I can understand your feelings when I look through my windows :)

  • Bloom Again on Dec 3, 2010

We have not gotten any snow yet and I am bracing myself. Love your writing! I found myself shuddering looking at the pictures. I was born in Florida and now live in the North so winter is not my favorite season.

  • gaby7 on Dec 24, 2010

I doubt whether I can make it in such cold weather! Here in my country when tempratures get to 10 degree celcius, teeth begin to rattle, now a situation of minus 10 will spell instant death!
