Self mutilation in verse.
Cutting against the edge of the night
Propelled from behind
By a heated blast of daylight
The street radiates the swelter
Like an echo of a nuclear blast
The world seeks the night’s cool shelter
I’m driving into tomorrow
With my headlights off
Somewhere in Macon, a girl waits, lonely
Somewhere in Reno, a baby cries, hungry
My destiny has been to go nowhere as fast as I could ride
I’m a shadow passing fast, seen for a moment only
I can’t see her tears of sorrow
The past keeps getting lost in tomorrow
The police cruiser passes me by
He winks and grins, a shark on the sly
I’ve left some blood on the road
I wipe it across my cheek with my hand
I didn’t feel a thing
It must’ve been the Sandman
Somewhere in Macon, a girl waits, lonely
Somewhere in Reno, a baby cries, hungry
My destiny has been to go nowhere as fast as I could ride
I’m a shadow passing fast, seen for a moment only
I’m driving like a knife
Into the soft underbelly
Of a useless, wasted life
Revving the motor, I’ll bust away the rust
Gathered on my soul
Blowin’ away the dust
The smell of road and dirt and smoke
Cough up my brain when I light my bowl
Somewhere in Macon, a girl waits, lonely
Somewhere in Reno, a baby cries, hungry
My destiny has been to go nowhere as fast as I could ride
I’m a shadow passing fast, seen for a moment only
Open throttle, choke down my final pill
The odometer keeps on rising
The world moves faster when I am standing still
Where I’ll stop I have no way of knowing
I’m a cut against the edge of night sky
Burnt by the wind of Hells’ blowing
Shot straight from the heat of the day
Someone will take my place as soon as I pass by
Somewhere in Macon, a girl waits, lonely
Somewhere in Reno, a baby cries, hungry
My destiny has been to go nowhere as fast as I could ride
I’m a shadow passing fast, seen for a moment only
A blast of daylight running
Like a fiery hand placed
Against a lover’s pale breast
The night beckons me, my tires humming
I cut against the night, pedal to the floor
Dusting off a turtle in a Jaguar
The machine and I are one, in a blur
The cop didn’t see me, donuts were a two-for-one score
Somewhere in Macon, a girl waits, lonely
Somewhere in Reno, a baby cries, hungry
My destiny has been to go nowhere as fast as I could ride
I’m a shadow passing fast, seen for a moment only
I am a machine, my blood is thirty-weight
I have gone beyond the exit of my dreams
Slipped past the boundary of the far horizon of Fate
Crashed and burning, a wreck smolders and hisses
I feel the pounding in my skull, screams in my mind
Stopping the bleeding from sudden kisses
I’m shocked by the damage I’ve left behind
Somewhere in Macon, a girl waits, lonely
Somewhere in Reno, a baby cries, hungry
My destiny has been to go nowhere as fast as I could ride
I’m a shadow passing fast, seen for a moment only
I’ve wrecked my car, I’ve wrecked my life
Spent too long on the edge of the knife
Falling to my knees, blood rushes from my mouth
The compass is shattered, my north is now south
No one but God can hear me cry for what I’ve lost
When the scales are weighed, I must pay the cost
Somewhere in Macon, a girl waits, lonely
Somewhere in Reno, a baby cries, hungry
My destiny has been to go nowhere as fast as I could ride
I’m a shadow passing fast, seen for a moment only
