I wrote this song / poem with the intention of people who are friends by having things in common. I didn’t realize that after I wrote it was talking about mexican people who couldn’t speak english. My grandfather was very racist and I remember being very offended when my mother would say something that was doing was just like what my grandfather would say or do. It was hurtful, but I realized after talking to my friend who lived in LA that every McDonalds wouldn’t hire her because she couldn’t speak spanish. So now who’s being prejuduce. The song fits for each cultural race that won’t accept people for who they are. I realized when I was dating a mexican girl that couldn’t speak english that it wasn’t going to work. To have intimacy I needed to understand her and vice versa I needed her to speak my language.
Speak My Language
you use to say I could change my life
but for what better ways would there be
than to sell my mind
to those who can’t see
you use to say I should change my life
and speak a language
that I can’t even understand
why should I change my way?
why would I stage my say
when they don’t even
speak my language
I hear the accusations that center my life
my mother use to say
to stop using my language
and look around and
choose a girl to be my wife
and that I surface
as the mirror of my grandfather
my father would hear me
speak my mind about his life
why should I conform to you
and I say what ever
I can hear them speak another language
I won’t stop you
until you speak my language
I won’t like you
until you speak my language
I won’t hate you
if you speak my language
I won’t change you
until you speak my language
I use to say I could change your life
but why should I waste my time?
I could try and love you for who you are
except I would have
to change at my prime
you use to say
I could be anything from a far
except you lost the will to be in my life
I won’t stop you
until you speak my language
I won’t like you
until you speak my language
I won’t hate you
if you speak my language
I won’t change you
until you speak my language
