During one of my recent experiments in the kitchen, I wondered why not write something on spices. Here is the result.

So many spices
found all over the world
and each one is so distinct  –
if one’s  mellow, the other one’s  bold.
Similarly we humans who
belong to a myriad cultures -
and follow traditions diverse.
Spices teach us
a plethora of  values
by their fragrance,
properties and hues.
Let us be like the cinnamon
that is so friendly and easygoing.
And like the nutmeg -
fun-loving and outgoing.
Strength and dependability
let’s emulate from the pepper.
And let us be passionate
just like the ginger.
Warmth and sweetness
let us learn from the vanilla
whether we live -
in Cuba or in China.
From the clove, let’s learn
to preserve our identity.
And from the anise, let’s learn
a lesson or two on humility.
Just like the fennel,
let’s strive to be sunny and buoyant
and like the cardamom,
let’s be sweet, mild and fragrant.
Cumin and coriander – the
inseparable duo
teach us to value friendship
as we enjoy the show.
Like allspice,
let’s be all-embracing
and like sesame
let’s try to be carefree.
Joy and sorrow
are everywhere rife.
Variety is truly
the spice of life.
