A fantasy about the ultimate destiny of spiders.
I am like a god, the spider said
In a voice I thought too loud
For her size was very small
Nearly hidden from my view
I amplify my voice ten fold
By thumping on my web
And to add the sound of silver wind
To best attract my prey
But autumn’s warmth in waning
And I have but few things left to do
Soon I must find a mate
To fertilize my thousand eggs
And to sacrifice himself
For the energy I will need
To lay and hide all those eggs
Next year’s generation
If you would hide in secret
You can watch this come to be
Then see me pass beyond all this
To pursue my destiny
I see the question on your face
Few humans know the truth
Of the purpose that we spiders serve
In things beyond your dreams
For when god gave us
The gifts of spinning silk
And skill at architecture
He had another purpose
I will rise from here
Into the heavens
On a magic thread of silk
And sail out among the stars
Then, with the work of all my kind
We will spin gigantic webs
Whose purpose is to hold
The entire universe together
