This is a brief poem about name calling and bullying. All creatures have feelings and we should respect one another. I have heard people refer to squirrels as tree rats, but I know they are really just squirrels.

I’m not a tree rat he murmured to his foes

Please don’t call me what I’m not and add to my woes

I make my way in a world of survival

I mean no harm and only seek your approval

You call me names that are not true

You see, I have feelings just like you

I’m not lazy or shiftless or rest on my laurels

I’m a hunter and gatherer with my own code of morals

Don’t call me names; there is no honor in that

If you were a cow, should I call you a vampire bat

We are all creatures of the earth, large, small and in between

To those who love us we could be president, king or queen

In mid afternoon with the glow of sunlight, I too smell the lilacs ever so sweet

You see we are more the same than different and do not need to compete

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names really do hurt

We are more the same than different and we should work together in concert

Name calling is bullying and causes much pain

Does it make you feel superior when actually your words are inane

We should all be kinder and more caring to one another

Be good and decent and act as brother to brother

You keep calling me a tree rat and you know that is not my name

I’m a squirrel I say so let’s all be on the team for life’s big game

What a great read this is Dennis cheers for sharing this… at first I was going to tell you how we in Scotland, are struggling to save our native red squirrels from the more urban grey squirrel, but by the end of your poem it was clear… that the bigger message was there excellent cheers once more.

I love squirrels, we have chipmunks here where I live. I was called names when I was little and it has left scars. Maybe I would have been a little more ambitious if I wasn’t bullied or name called. It does hurt. Yet we still do it because of the power it has over people. Be it jealousy be it cruel. Shouldn’t be done. Thanks this is a good read with a lot to comment on.

Thanks so much for all your great comments on my works, my dear friend Mr. Dennis! Speaking about your work this time, I think it’s not only about squirrel even though you talk about squirrel. It’s actually aim to the whole wide world. I do agree, all of us have to realize the fact and how to deal with those ‘name’ bullying! :)

I love the squirrels in my backyard and I hate to hear them called tree rats. Bullying and name calling in any form is terrible.

A very insightful poem here Freethinker! Every-line seem to teach a thing or so on how life should be lived in a given social, political and/or ecological environment.

@yes me – I have to tell you that there are red squirrels on the Isle of Wight. Reds are indigenous in the UK. I think Greys came from the continent…

I like the points made in this poem and feel that its title will attract far more readers, including some name callers (like myself come to think of it) who need to consider the poem’s message. Cheers Dennis (I think!)

Love the poem very much..it is such an ease to read as well as the rhyming..incidentally we occasionally have squirrels as visitors and share our foods in the kitchen..every afternoon…there are 3 of them :)

Thanks for a wonderful poem..indeed, what’s with the name calling :)

An inspiring poem. Name calling can really hurt and should be discouraged.

As a child we saved three Squirrels that had been abandonded and reared them to young adults and released them in the park they came from their great creatures and shouldn’t get the bad press they do! LB

I love the poem, and the accompanying message. Name-calling is not a good attitude to practice.

A much needed lesson from this squirrel. Nice poem.

I have never considered calling or relating a beautiful little squirrel to a “tree rat”l. This is a great example of how some can
interpret life in the wrong direction. Beautiful poetry…

I wish I could see squirrels in their natural environment but I only see them in the zoo. Great lesson for all human beings Dennis. :)

I quite like them and loved living in Manchester where there were many tame ones which would scurry up the legs of my jeans to see what I had for them to eat. I live in Northern Ireland now where there are fewer of them but I do love to watch them. I never heard htem being called tree rats. An interesting read.

I saw you comment on another writer’s article about how people don’t comment when they add you as friend. Not fair play, and I always try to comment on the work of those who comment on mine.
