A sunny but very cold and windy day on the beach today.

Image via Wikipedia

*

I just had to go onto the beach today

In the gale which was blowing with force,

Watching the waves crash onto the shore

As the storm pursued its course.

*

There is nothing that I like better

Than to stand with my arms up high,

And feel the wind tearing at my clothes

And gazing at the threatening sky.

*

In the distance the gulls made me smile

As they tried so hard to get lift,

But the buffeting wind dragged them back and forth

And they look just a little bit miffed.

*

Sailboats were locked in the harbour.

They weren’t venturing out today,

Their masts would never stand up to the gale

So at their moorings they all did stay.

*

I tried to walk down to the water’s edge

To race against the incoming flow,

But nothing is safe from the raging sea

When its energy it needs to offload.

Even approaching storm has its beauty. Another well-penned poem, Christine. Just be sure that your place is safe, when this storm hits land.

It’s liberating indeed to stand in a nature setting with arms outstretched or up high, when the wind is blowing – a sense of freedom! A great poem.

Had to laugh at your seagulls… I\’d be miffed too if I was being blown about like that. It\’s great to be out and about experiencing nature\’s finest… be it storm or shine!

  • Kheng on Mar 4, 2011

Lovely work. Reminds me of the sudden storm we had this afternoon. The sky turned dark suddenly and the rain simply poured. We can feel the strong wind tugging at our clothes as we hurried to find shelter.

Unfortunately, I had to get back to work or I would stay and enjoy the storm.

  • jimbob1 on Mar 5, 2011

    CR…
Hang on to your clothes in the gale
Or you can write us another tale
Of how the wind tore the cloth
And blew all your clothes off
As you raised your arms in the gale!
I voted that I like this one…the photo bore out the truth of your written word…thanks and take care…

Looking at the date you posted your (brilliant, again) poem Christine, I was at the coast in Northern France with very similar conditions. I was thinking similar things – wish I had the skill to put them down in words like you can.

Great job – your poems are like shanties and you do them so well

PS how about a different style – like http://authspot.com/poetry/spring-breaks/ (which I know you’ve read)
You are so skilfull that I’m sure you could do a great job in a different genre, and inspire us again
