A hungry person seeks nourishment.
Oh the winter chill crept across my soul
Not the sole of my shoe, but of my being
A slight bread crum was all I sought
From hunger and fear my spirit was wrought
I had not known hunger for too many years
But this part of my journey had brought that and many tears
My belly could not remember a good solid meal
My outstretched hands for mercy was my appeal
Each passerby stared upon my weary face
Every glaring second, I saw no mercy in this place
Feed your fellow man, I thought all along
A little mercy for one who once belonged
Finally, I crumbled in exhaustion down on one knee
Only death by starvation would truly set me free
It’s not that I saught to end my spirit’s light
It’s my body’s lack of food that convinced me not to fight
Then, out stretched the hand of one kind soul,
Not three, nor five, but barely seven years old
This is for you, she said with a whisper
I thought you were hungry, it’s from me and my sister
Bless you my child, this will feed me for the night
I hope it does mister, make everything right
Tomorrow will come and hunger will return
Then back we shall come, til your hunger doesn’t yearn
Thanks for your kindness and generosity
No need to thank me, it’s from the light that you seek
And with not a moment’s whisper, she vanished during my feast
A kind and gentle soul, decided to feed society’s beast
Tonight I shall rest and make peace with this world,
Thanks to the nurturing soul of a sweet little girl
