You hear numbers everywhere – one in ten children have autism; 57,000 people died at Gettysburg; every ten seconds an animal is being abused; one in five teens are addicted to drugs; etc. (Disclaimer: I didn’t actually do any research to find these statistics; I made them up off the top of my head). This poem shares some views on what some people may think of such numbers.
Gulping things down that they couldn’t handle,
Bringing to a state the mind would try to mangle,
Three feet above your head it’ll dangle,
The numbered statistic you’ll eventually be,
The ratio of people for the world to see,
Once you drop you lose your identity,
Their memories of you will die in time,
Decades live on for others to mime, More statistics come while others decline,
They remind us how our lives are so fine, But this thing we feel we cannot define,
The prizes we won and emotions felt,
They’re not shown in the cards we’re dealt,
When we are gone they’re left to melt,
Though there is one thing we leave behind,
Another number added to the numbers’ bind,
A statistic the authorities will one day find,
Helpful to the world in some unhelpful way,
Knowledge for people who don’t care anyway,
People who think they’ll live through their next day,
They don’t know they’re statistics too,
Things that matter are things they don’t do,
How to impact the world, they don’t have a clue, They could all try and they could all think,
All they may want to make a link,
Tell us we’ll miss something if we blink,
When I can’t see why they even try,
They’re outnumbered no matter how they cry,
Out to the sun they’re left to dry,
Being and creating statistics worldwide,
The numbers above your head you’ll try to hide,
The scary percentages of those who died,
Is it worth being where you are now?
All this happened, and you don’t know how?
You wish you knew how,
