I wrote this back in July 2002. I don’t really remember anything that lead up to it. Just thought it was one of my best non-romantic love poems.

guns, knives, angry stares, harsh words
drinking, smoking, doing drugs
getting caught up in someone else’s life
trying to be the hero and rescue them
from the demons lurking in their lost souls
don’t get too close
you might never see
the light of day again
you can’t be the hero all the time
step back watch the fight
and see your friend go down
why weren’t you there when you were needed the most?
it’s too late now
as you stand over your friend’s body
motionless and limp
you cry because you know
you could have saved this friend
if you had gotten them help in the beginning
maybe none of this would have happened
now you feel so bad and want nothing more
but to take your own life
instead of living with the pain
pain that it’s your fault your friend is dead
what are you gonna do now?
there’s only one solution
