After over 25 years of strip mining in Appalachia the land was ravaged and the surrounding communities suffered from its ill-effects.

The ill-effects of strip mining

In Appalachia had seen

The land ravaged

This happened

Over a 25 year period

As operators wrestled

With down-slope

Which caused mud-slides

- – -

There was much erosion

And all needed plant

Cover was abandoned

- – -

Sediments were carried

As water flowed

Which resulted in the destruction

Of many beneficial

Micro organisms

That lived in the soil

- – -

The topography

Of the landscape

With many species

Displaced

The final blow

Was massive pollution

That impacted the water supply

To surrounding communities

Strip mining is not good for any area, but big companies do not care and are not bound by any legislation.

These giant mining corporations do not care less about the environment and the safety of the people living there. Hope this practice be stop.

Strip mining’s a quick and easy way to get at your minerals, but it does play havoc with the surrounding area.

Sounds like some poor planning. The long term ramifications should have been examined years and years ago.
