A poem based on a photo of an engaged couple.

Paired caterpillars crawl

One after the other

Across the vast, empty plain.

Below the caterpillars

Lie two deep pools

Of brown, one narrow

The other wide, round.

The thick forest extends

Running down, petering out

Into scrub brush.

Pressed against another,

Clean, bare, smooth.

Long grass, swept across the plain,

Neat, ordered, groomed.

Darkness surrounds the two

Highlighting their features.

Nothing separates them.
