Written in the garden during long London evenings in May.

And the shadows long are stretching
Like two sentries at the gate
See the tall trees
In the garden
Gently swaying
As the hour is getting late

And the sun is slowly sinking
Burning orange in the sky
As the chill comes
To the garden
Still we’re staying
Waiting for the day’s goodbye

Now the stars are shining brightly
Switching on celestial lights
Quietly talking
In the garden
Lovers saying
How we long for summer nights

I am so with you on this, I sit up until it’s dark at this time of year and still sleep with the curtains open, I love the light nights. Great poem!!!

Beautiful! And for all the rest of us in the good ol’ USA, what he refers to as the garden is what we would refer to as our yard, not a patch of vegetables. Correct, revivor?

  • revivor on May 22, 2009

yes we have grass, trees, apples growing, compost heap at the end of the garden and the two big trees referred to in the poem

I thoroughly enjoyed this poem. Loved the repeating phrase, “in the garden, gently swaying/still we’re staying…” Gorgeous photo! Compliments the poem perfectly.

What a sweetly passionate poem! All the beautiful elements at play,
