After reading an article recently by someone who thinks that anyone who leaves less than an in-depth commentary on her work is an obvious idiot, I was inspired to write about people who think they have cornered the market on intelligence.

Feeling haughty, are we?

Sitting on our pedestal

Looking down on civilization

We are far superior to everyone around us

Or so we like to think

Do we not hold a monopoly on intelligence?

Are we not overly endowed

With the wisdom of the universe?

So enraptured are we with ourselves

That we cannot see the obvious lack

Kindness, respect, tact and consideration

For those with whom we must share this planet

Have we, in all our schooling

Learned nothing?

To whom much is given,

Much is required

If we have a vision for this world

A plan for the future of mankind

Should we not share it,

Rather than discuss it amongst ourselves?

Oh, how the mighty have fallen

When we realize that we

Could learn invaluable lessons

From those we snub our collective noses at

Those out there in the trenches

Making a difference instead of talking about it

While we sit idly by

Reveling in our superiority.

Well said, I could not have said it better myself. Of course it was well written, by a most talented person.

Love it. Some seek praise. Some earn it. Those who earn it receive it.

  • Themax on Nov 24, 2009

so true and wonderful, love it the way you expressed! Thanks!

  • inuni on Nov 24, 2009

Wonderful poem! I sure agree with you :)

I like the lines. Well those who get the praises often forget themselves. Those who get what they wanted often don’t get the sympathy of others.

  • dgraphicrookie on Nov 24, 2009

True. I hope those with superiority complex reads this. :)

    There are quite a few
Self opinionated folks in the world
    Who think the world?
    Will collapse without them

I thought I alone suffer from ego cancer
    Here I find terminal cases
    Leading the queue
Where I once thought only I stood.

    We all are egoists
    Like I am going to
    Convert this comment
    Into a poem
And some one will retort back
    It was my preserve
    That’s it
It’s not my theory it’s universal
I am just one simple soul
    Seeking to share knowledge
    For free.

so true in so many parts of life – there are the people who choose to float above, judge others without seeking to understand- then there are those that get involved, get on with it and make the difference – great work!

I agree with this poem. No one is anyone to tell anyone who is intelligent or not. Too many people think they know everything when they really don’t.

  • AvantPointGuard on Dec 2, 2009

    its all good–no worries

  • Pithom on Dec 4, 2009

Sarcasm is a great vehicle for getting a point across. You worked it very well into your poem. Thanks.

“Do we not hold a monopoly on intelligence?
    Are we not overly endowed
With the wisdom of the universe?”

    That was class.

  • PhoenixRox on Dec 5, 2009

You drove that point across very well.I don’t like people who think they are the boss of everything and everyone.

He who thinks he is a fool teach him .He who know not that he know not, is a fool shon him.Can we tell all the stars in the sky.

The world is full of people who do not know that intelligence is not measureed in how much we learn.(Do we remember all that we learn) but how we are able to apply what we remember in real life situations and how much we can use this to contribute to the uplifting of others.
    nice poem you have written

Yes, you’re right… They’re iritating… But your well-articulate poem, the impact of someone’s superiority complex becomes an interesting subject… :D
