Hopefully, we have moved a little further away from our issues of class and social status (as well as race) when it comes to dating and marriage, but this sort of thing was quite prevalent when I was in high school and college. Young people wanted to break away from their parents ideals, but were so afraid to upset the balance.

You lurk in the shadows
On the street corner just outside
The glow of the streetlight
Like a junkie in withdrawal
Fiending for the next hit
And I am the dealer
In my hands I hold
Everything you want
But should not have
The high that you desire
But have been warned to avoid
So you seek me out in my usual hangouts
Your name is a constant entry
In my inbox and caller ID
What do you want from me?
I thought we were done
After your last attack of social conscience
You were so ashamed; so torn
Ran away to hide and rehabilitate
Back to your safe suburban life
But the pull is just too strong
There’s something so intriguing
About the girl from around the way
From the wrong side of the tracks
With the cocoa-colored skin
And ebony eyes that beckons you
Even though you know she is taboo
