A poem about the tearful regrets of a drunk driver.

She staggered helplessly

From her wrecked smoky automobile

Gazing clueless at shocked by-standers

Watching, as the police and paramedics

Glided down the slope in rescue of

A young mother and her two little boys

People moved to tears at the sudden and tragic loss of lives

No sense in crying a river when the harm is done

Save the tears of wine by better judgment and safety rules

Ambulance sirens, brake lights, and back-ups

Stopped the flow of traffic of stressed out workers

Heading home from a hard day’s work

Here we go again, Daisy,” she mumbled under her drunken breath

“What’s my offense Officer,” mimicking a military type salute

“D.U.I.!” the officer announced, to the collaborating nod of everyone

Dead upon impact? What a shame.”

No Ma’am. Driving under the influence”

What a senseless waste of lives!

I’m glad I don’t drive anymore. I drink too much. I’ve been lucky.

Wise choice Guy. Wish people will make better choices to save lives.

A very sobering article Deeda and a warning that everyone should keep in mind. it’s such a shame when lives are lost this way, just very sad. Great post.

The title? I can’t speak…Broken people drink and the innocent lose their lives. You portrayed the woman so well. I could almost see her standing there saluting.

Senseless waste of lives. With all that is being done to combat drunk driving it is still taking too many innocent lives. Great piece on a very troubling part of our society.

I wish broken people will find solace in God’s love and not in wine. Thanks for your comments.

This makes me glad that we have a good local bus system. I agree, there is no solace to be found in alcohol compared to that which can be found in the love of Jesus.

Can’t agree more. Hope we have a safer drive this year.

Ouch! This is so witty & yet so relevant, Deeda – nice one!

  • Freethinking on Jan 25, 2011

It is okay to drink alcohol and it is okay to drive – it is NOT okay to drink and drive. Just this past week an 82 year old man died after he was hit by a drunk driver at 7:30 on a Sunday morning. It was the drunk driver’s 6th DUI. Thankfully, he is now in jail. You put together an extremely sobering poem.
