It was a dark and eerie night;
All was still but the sound of owl’s hooting;
The dark clouds had covered up all the light;
The outside cars could distantly be heard screeching.

A family of four lay silently sleeping in a small cabin,
Winds started blowing, all the while steadily growing stronger,
And the family started tossing and turning,
Never dreaming about their upcoming adventure.

On a Kansas wheat field they resided,
Not far from the Nebraska border,
Where they lived happily with no worries in mind,
With no preparations for their upcoming disaster.

In a short period of time, the winds whipped through the land;
The sound of animals fleeing could be heard;
The family stressfully awakened,
As they heard the disturbed chirping of a bird.

All of a sudden, a gust of wind swept through the air,
Smashing a long tree branch into their window;
The thunder roared and the lightening flashed;
All the while the family thought, “Oh no!!”

Quickly, the family rushed into their basement,
As a funnel became visible,
And the tree broke the window of the cabin they rent;
From the basement, the family could sense the worsening trouble.

The trees fell down onto their dwelling;
They could hear the rain pounding on their roof,
And in the basement they sat shaking and shivering,
As the animals went aloof.

Finally, the rain and wind halted;
The thunder and lightening ceased,
And as the family descended back up, they stopped astonished,
At the sight of the room ruined and flooded.

All the animals had fled in despair,
And the family stared disappointed;
Even after this great disaster,
The family learnt that they should never take things for granted.
