A poem for Duff’s writing challenge #16.

I was walking alone in the forest,
on a quiet and beautiful Summer night.
A full moon glowed high in the sky,
casting its bright and silvery light.
That night a gentle breeze was blowing,
with a cool refreshing feel to the air.
As I strolled slowly through the forest,
the wind stirred my long black hair.
Night creatures crept among the trees,
crickets were chirping loudly nearby.
It was a peaceful and serene night,
with stars twinkling in the clear sky.
I walked along the well-worn path,
my spirit feeling wild and free.
I looked upon wondrous sights,
while rejoicing in nature’s beauty.
The serenity was disrupted by a rattle,
it was an ominous and scary sound.
My scream reached a deafening crescendo,
scaring the night creatures all around.
On the ground lay a huge coiled snake,
it was primed and ready to attack.
I stood there frozen on that spot,
too terrified to cautiously step back.
After many agonizing moments passed,
the snake finally slithered away.
I exhaled my breath very slowly,
happy to be alive for another day.
I continued on my way home,
watching every step that I took.
For that snake had frightened me,
and my whole body still shook.
