I can only imagine what Hurricane Katrina was like, so this probably doesn’t give its full disaster justice.

I still remember the details
All of them
Everything from the great white watery mountain striking the sky
To how it had left on swift legs
Trying to outrun facing those whom it had punished
That day
I still remember the shrieks that had fallen broken to the ground
I can recall with unease the earth splintering;
Gnashing its serrated teeth as I ran tumbling through nights
How stars spluttered goodbyes and winked shut
Leaving us to fend in the crawling black
That day
Lightning had thrown back its head and cackled its rattling laugh
Right before slapping us about with clenched fists
Winged creatures of fury carried bundles of hail
And then released them over us before taking off to reload
My, how swiftly they had returned on the devil’s wings
Not only with ice
But with glass and nails and bodies of fellows
All of which were sent screaming
Careening
Burning…
And I can tell you how the things had splintered our frail forms
How it had thrown us onto the gaping pavement
And it relished at how well we shattered
Calmly,
The hulking creator walked to the door of our mortal lives
With long icy blue fingers
Shut out the light
That day,
That day…
