That night we went to each other crazy …
That night we went to each other crazy
Fell on us only an ominous darkness
His mumbled ditches,
And Asia smelled cloves.
And we passed through the city a stranger,
Through the smoky song and the midnight heat, –
Some under the constellation Serpens,
Take a look at each other not daring.
It could be Istanbul or Baghdad
But, alas! not Warsaw, not Leningrad,
And bitter this dissimilarity
Stifling as the air orphanage.
And it seemed: next stride century,
And the drum beat the invisible hand
And sounds like the secret signs
Before us is circled in the darkness.
We were with you in a mysterious haze,
As if walking on the no-man’s land
But a month diamond felucca
Suddenly emerged over the meeting, parting …
And if you come back that night and you
In your strange fate for me,
You know that dream someone
Holy this moment.
