A poem about temptation and addiction.

At first, the blackberry

Juicy

Sticking out

Delicious

But then, he couldn’t stop

With each sweet berry, it became harder

As he ate, he went deeper and deeper in

Until he got stuck in the middle

Each day, the bushes growing around him

More and more thorns

Cutting him

Scraping him

Surrounding him

Drawing blood

He was trapped

With no way out

The end was near

He saw it coming

Slowly creeping up

But he had no way to stop it

He was trapped

On the last day

He stared death in the face

And challenged it

He would have dueled it had it not been for his saviors,

The ones who cut up the black berries

They had saved his life

And he was grateful

For he was free at last:

Free from the blackberries

Free to move about

Free to do what he wanted

He was free,

His mind was pure,

But they kept him away,

Far away,

As far away as they could

From the berries

Those wonderful, tempting berries

As try as they might

They could not stop the urge of the berries

That strong temptation

And soon the plants grew back

And threatened his life once more

For they,

His heroes,

His saviors,

The police and the law

Could not stop

That overwhelming temptation of the drug,

Those wonderful berries

Hard to put down (as I read it again…:D). Very nice metaphor you have worked in.
