The albatross shares the responsibilities in breeding and their bonds may last for over 30 years.
The albatross of the Southern Oceans
Part of the Diomedea and Phoebetria families
Include the sooty, laysan and wandering albatrosses
Have wing spans greater than 10 feet
- – -
This bird can soar 20 hours daily
A mother shears up her nest
For another year’s breeding
As she continues to be bonded
With her male counterpart
Which can last over 30 years
- – -
For two months
After the eggs are laid
The mother’s goal
Is to keep them alive
- – -
After the albatross chicks
Are hatched
The male covers miles
To gather food from the sea
To feed their young
- – -
At times the male albatross
Relieves the female
Of her arduous task
And assumes the responsibility
- – -
Unfortunately
When some parents depart
They never return
And their young
Are executed by vultures
Before they are developed enough
