“The author of her book” by Anne Bradstreet is a complex metaphor about the author comparing her book to a child. The author to her book is like a mother to her child. She repeatedly compares her book to her child, and talks about how she would never have her child in rags. The compressing of her book to a child in rags is simply because it was not finished or edited and yet it was exposed. She even went on to mention she tried to wash its face (13), concerning revising, but she still didn’t feel it was good enough. These defects and mishaps gave the poem a sad and disappointing tone, which displayed her discontent. It wasn’t in an interest to make money that her work was published, but against her will by “friends, less wise than true”. She is writing to her audiences and those that partake in the miss release of her private writing to make known of how she feels.
