Ballad summarising Shakespeare’s Hamlet
(Note: works best with soft guitar music)
The day that Hamlet’s father died
The whole of Elsinore cried
Hamlet thought it was suspicious
The king’s death, was it vicious?
Said Horatio, he saw a ghost
But that is not what mattered most
Alas the ghost was Hamlet’s father
He said Claudius killed him but was it another?
Could Hamlet trust this apparition?
That uttered such an accusation
The king said he died by a poisoned ear
The queen apparently did not shed a single tear
She remarried, less then 2 months later
To Claudius, the spoken perpetrator
His mother suspected in the crime
The ghost said he’d find out, all in good time
The ghost told Hamlet he must swear
But the young prince was still aware
That he might be lying, there could be danger
Of the story told by this translucent stranger
The ghost leaves Hamlet to find a conclusion
Which may have been told by this illusion
The tension was rising in the air
So Hamlet left to find the fair…
…. Ophelia, she was beauty, she was trusted
She was his woman, she was lusted
Hamlet spoke to her like he was mad
She would soon betray him for the love of her dad
Polonius was one of the great men in the land
He was the new king’s right hand man
He and the king were troubled with Hamlet’s lunacy
They asked Ophelia to sacrifice their unity
Hamlet got some actors to act the betrayal
He himself had written a tale
His play showed how his father died
He could use this to find if the new king lied
After the play the king came undone
Hamlet had now started to have fun
The play had proved the king’s bad deed
Claudius would have to bleed
Hamlet goes to visit his mother
To tell the betrayal which killed his father
Polonius listens to the conversation behind a curtain
Hamlet hears and stabs through, hoping to hurt him
Polonius dies and the queen cries
Ophelia in a new form of madness dies
Claudius, afraid of what Hamlet will do
Puts him on a ship to England, to sail across the big blue
As the boat travels across the sea
Hamlet slays Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the king’s trusties
Pirates then attack his ship
But he manages to get back to Denmark quick
He returns to Elsinore, revenge on his mind
He would not be very kind
A sword fight was arranged between him and Laertes,
Polonius’s son who hates Hamlet for ruining his family
Claudius and Laertes plot and poison his sword tip
If Hamlet got cut, then he was pipped
In the fight the queen dies from poisoned wine
Hamlet and Laertes are on the decline
They both get poisoned by the sword
But Hamlet manages to stab the evil lord
Laertes forgives Hamlet for killing Polonius
Before they both die, as does Claudius
Horatio is the only survivor of this mess
Fortinbras, the last heir returns from the west
He is crowned king of Elsinore
He honors Hamlet, and remembers him forever more
