David was a shepherd
When he was anointed King
But he did not live long enough
To see the angels sing

And shepherds were the first to know
How Bethlehem was blessed
By the sweet baby Jesus
Held close to Mary’s breast

They trembled as the angels sang
For they didn’t understand
How God might send a baby
To free every woman and man

And Mary had such wisdom
Though she was very young
To raise our precious savior
Just like her other sons

She knew about his mission
For it had been foretold
At his circumcision
When he was eight days old

How he would heal the thousands
Of every known disease
And fill each empty, humble heart
With an abiding peace

Then He became our sacrifice
If we would only just believe
The splendid gift of eternal life
We could all one day receive

And now he intercedes for us
Before His father’s throne
And soon one day he will return
To show us our new home
