A look at the bad guys who make movies great.

14.  Davey Jones  Pirates of the Caribbean  (Played by Bill Nighy)

This was a great villain.  To play a subject of legend so well…

13.  Top Dollar   The Crow   (played by Michael Wincott)

Playing a villain in a Tim Burton Movie is something different altogether.  Because the characters are always so over the top, it can be easy to overdo it and make a mockery of the role.  Wincott played this to perfection.

12.  Darth Maul   Star Wars: Phantom Menace  (Played by Ray Park)

For a guy who really doesn’t say a thing, he makes a great villain.

11.  Bill the Butcher   Gangs of New York  (played by Daniel Day-Lewis)

A different breed of villain… again, portraying a historical figure.  Day-Lewis makes this film.

10.  Pennywise   It   (Played by Tim Curry)

Single handedly created the fear of clowns.

9.  Samara   The Ring   (Played by Daveigh Chase)

The impact of this character had been dulled a bit since the first time we saw it,  what with every horror film in the world trying to duplicate it for the next two years.  But the first time I saw the girl climb out of the T.V.?  Scared the bejesus out of me!

8.  Agent Smith   The Matrix Trilogy   (Played by Hugo Weaving)

A classic case of a villain subtly carrying a movie, because Keanu Reeves sucked.

7.  Jack Torrance   The Shining   (Played by Jack Nicholson)

No one does it like Jack.  If anyone else had played this role, the movie would have been an obscure horror piece of trash.  With him, it’s a classic.

6.  Jason Voorhees   Friday the 13th   (Played by several actors)

No movie for this one, due to censors.  Jason was a concept villain.  Never spoke… didn’t need to.  The perfect monster.

5.  Pinhead   Hellraiser (Played by Doug Bradley)

Pinhead was another one who scared me half to death.  So cold, so emotionless… and has pins in his head.  Only Clive barker could have conceived this, and only Doug Bradley could have portrayed it.

4.  Freddy Kruger   Nightmare on Elm Street   (Played by Robert Englund)

Freddy became a bit of a farce of himself in the end, but in the early movies, he was one of the scariest.

3.  The Joker   Batman   (Played by Jack Nicholson)

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Batman movies aren’t about Batman at all.  They’re about the bad guys!  And who better to master to master a Burton villain better than the master himself?

2.  Darth Vader   Star Wars   (Played by James Earl Jones)

The Standard by which villains are measured.

1.  The Joker   The Dark Knight  (Heath Ledger)

I was never a big Heath Ledger fan, and when I heard he was playing the joker, I very nearly didn’t see the movie.  Which would have been a shame, because it was a masterpiece.  Perhaps the finest piece of acting i have ever seen.

So there you have it.  There will no doubt be arguments, but isn’t that the entire point of lists like this?

Great list! Would have had words if Mr. Ledger wasn’t at least in the top three. ;) Seeing that he’s in the most coveted spot, there are definitely no need for words…LOL. Great minds think alike. Heath definitely deserved to take that spot. Landslide! And for him to be given the top spot by a non-fan…kudos! I may have had a few different picks, but fear is subjective so I applaud you again. Great list! :)

Kristy took the words right out of my mouth. I did hear something about Heath Ledger after his untimely death. I heard that he had said that the role of the joker was so dark for him that he was having trouble dealing with it. It has been speculated that this contributed to his death. I think he played the best Joker of all time. I don’t think anyone could hold a candle to his portrayal of the joker.

I myself love horror movies. In fact my husband gets upset with me cause every time I see an old “B” horror movie or a collection of old horror movies I always pick it up.

Meticulously compiled celebration of the movie villains here. Delighted Pennywise made the list, he gave me the heeby-jeebys as a kid. Although, I actually prefer Nicholson’s Joker to Ledger’s. Both were excellent mind you.

Also…have you seen Pan’s Labyrinth? The army general nutjob in that film was one of the most psychotic villains I’ve ever seen!

Oh, and Spacey’s John Doe from Seven was sorely missed…….but that’s just me being picky

OK the TV in Poltergeist, Ray Feines Nazi bastard in Schindlers list, The real terminator Arnold!, alien from aliens, the book of the dead from that freaking classic movie series, the black knight from Monty Python. The abdominable snow man from Rudolph that thing still scares the crap out of me! and I even know he turns good at the end.

Im sorry but we have to demote the Borg queen. A hot chick that assimilates a bunch of nerd boys just isn’t scary.

Jaws should be number 3 on the list.

    Leatherface!

Dude, you used the american version of Ring? *facepalm* Sadako was way creepier than Samara and her CGI machinations. Other than that (and Davey Jones… that was a baaaad movie) good list.

I think Agent Smith of the Matrix films had to be the coolest. I’m surprised Michael Meyers of the Halloween films isn’t on the list. That guy scared the crap out of me when I saw Halloween back when it first came out in ‘78. I was actually terrified of going to bed later that night!!
