Duff Challenge # (sorry.. lost count)

A blushing bride being dressed just now

A matter of moments she’ll be exchanging vows

with the one who was not of her own choosing

but for the love of her family, she’ll be obliging…

***

A debt to be paid, in exchange for her life

Ah, this was not her dream to be just someone’s wife

Peer pressure and gratitude was brought into action

And her answer was not to a question but just a confirmation…

***

And so she was dressed in that white wedding gown

Five hours still before she’ll be allowed to go down

And her racing mind is now rebelling at the thought

But raised conservatively she brought the uprising to a halt…

***

Now she wonders will everything be just alright

Will she make it unscathed right after the first night

Or will her brute of a husband take her against her will

And use her body until all of his lust is filled…

***

But wait, maybe his husband-to-be is also a coward

Afterall, he allowed his elders to move this union forward

And they haven’t even seen each other even for a while

Ah, maybe she can get the best of him! It made her smile…

***

And as tradition goes, she heard a knock on the door

The artist who will make her portrait was threading the floor

Setting up his equipment and asked her to make a pose

And promised to make her portrait as lovely as a rose…

***

So he worked with the paints and the brush

And looking at him now she cannot help but blush

For he was good looking as he was artistic

And his measuring looks made her feel narcissistic…

***

The gown was copied into the canvass in such perfection

And as the time passes by she can’t resist the notion

of imagining him to be the love of her life

and not that nobody who has to force somebody to be his wife…

***

Coming to her face, the artist asked

Why is it that her smile seemed to be masked

Not genuine at all and on her wedding day

So she was forced to tell him the farce she has to play…

***

Tears poured forth and she blurted out

All the anguish and the bitterness of a future in doubt

And then she asked for pardon for her foolishness

Feeling a little shy of her sudden openness…

What a sweet ending! Pity most arranged marriages don’t work out so perfectly – but I love the story!

What a happy twist on a plot that usually ends in sadness if not tragedy.

Great story I enjoyed it very much. happy endings are great fun.

Marantha you would be surprised at the frequency in which arranged marriages work out just fine. It is probably just as high as freely chosen marriages.

I think this is really interesting. It seemed certain that the artist was the groom…Some how I was a little disappointed in that. I’ a little disappointed in that too, because I shouldn’t over analyze and dissect the piece. Anyway, I still think this is a very well written piece. Great work.
