Duff Challenge # (sorry.. lost count)

***

But the charm of the man captured her as he smiled

And agreed with her that freedom of choice she must desire

But could it be so horrible not to give this groom a chance

Even if she hasn’t given him a little bit of a glance…

***

He went on with a story, one of his own

of how he was too was to a marry a girl unknown

and heart flew out to him as he related himself

of how first he hated being told he’s in need of help…

***

She thought of it first and she blurted out

Why don’t they elope now that they’re both in doubt

She confirmed the attraction that held her to him

She knows she can love this man, more than just a whim…

***

He smiled so tenderly that her heart skipped a beat then two

As his face came closer and closer, now her love was true

Her feminine weakness is now causing her whole being to shake

As she anticipated the kiss that she’s sure he’ll make…

***

But the kiss didn’t come and the red of his lips just spoke

And he said he was flatterred of the offer but it has to go in smoke

for he learned to love the girl he was soon to wed

and she stiffened from jealousy and almost ran crying to her bed…

***

He stood up and showed her the portrait he’s finally done

Caressed her cheeks and said “Be steadfast little one..”

“Who knows you too may love the one waiting there for you

I am sure he is anxious, and feeling confused like you do…”

***

He was so brave and his words strengthened her too

She felt the connection and regret of what things has come to

Here she was on her wedding day longing for another one

The one who was painting her portrait, a gift for another man…

***

Ah, he was right.. she thought and hoped for the best

And she heard the bell tolls and the sudden unrest

Her journey into the unknown is calling her now

She’ll make the best of it.. no matter when, no matter how…

***

The church was festive, decorated grandly as choirs do sing

The music was sweet but for her it was a hateful thing

Walking down the aisle, she moved as if in a dream

Tired of fighting for her future seemed so really dim…

***

She slowly took her steps and decided to be brave

the artist inspired her to make the best of what she would have

She smiled brightly as the man turned around and she can’t believe herself

Her world burst into blinding brightness… for the groom was the artist himself…

What a sweet ending! Pity most arranged marriages don’t work out so perfectly – but I love the story!

Great story I enjoyed it very much. happy endings are great fun.

Marantha you would be surprised at the frequency in which arranged marriages work out just fine. It is probably just as high as freely chosen marriages.

  • S A JOHNSON on Dec 26, 2009

I think this is really interesting. It seemed certain that the artist was the groom…Some how I was a little disappointed in that. I’ a little disappointed in that too, because I shouldn’t over analyze and dissect the piece. Anyway, I still think this is a very well written piece. Great work.
