Interesting. Here in Slovakia, people usually get stuff from friends and family when their child is born, not give gifts to them. But it looks like a very good way of letting people know …

Anyway, you just made me want to visit the store again. Haha, I want some cake now, yet all my planned meals for today consist only of fish and vegetables .

Hmmm, lets see, I have about 30 Euros for as long as I can stretch them … preferably at least 2 weeks … cakes are expensive … mall is about 300 meters away … it is raining … it is pleasantly cold … I am lazy … I have work to do … I am going to buy that cake since work is harder than walk Yay, thanks for the inspiration.

I want one from each of those sweets. hmmm very tempting. Sending my wishes to the couple and a BIG kiss for the sweeeet baby.

@Michal – of course, we will give gift to the baby (can be item or money in red packet). It is the Chinese tradition to give cakes and red eggs to friends and relative on the baby’s first month, to share their joy.

in the older days, parents of the baby gave red eggs, ang ku kueh (the red colour thing), glutinous rice, even chicken to relatives and friends on baby’s first month, everything homemade, but nowadays they modify them with cakes or cakes with some items by ordering from cake shop (depend on their budget). Nowadays they even modify them by just inviting them to their home and they cater buffet spread and just give cake sets to people who are not invited to the celebration, however, for closer friends/relatives, they may be invited to the buffet spread and also receiving the cakes, all depend on their preference and budget, same for the gifts given by relatives/friends, whatever it is, it’s always the thoughts that counts.

for this particular box, the parents’ names (Mr and Mrs So and So) were printed on the cover of the box, the baby’s photo on the name card of the cake shop (if you turn overleaf), nowadays most cake shops will do this if you order in bulk. However, they were censored by the photographer, that’s me, haha.

Wow, this is even more information than in the message … It is interesting to get to know the traditions different from our own. Anyway, people here in Slovakia like to think that it is thought that counts too. But, it has been a long time since we became a materialistic society … So, many people say thanks many times over for a small toy for their kid while thinking you are a cheap b*stard and that they should have gotten a huge plasma TV instead … Well, at least that is usually the case of towns’ people. Anyway, it is usually people with low intellect that think this way.

Oh, maybe I should also add that pretty much each region and usually each village\smaller town has its own traditions (often very different from the rest of the country) here in Slovakia. That is funny considering Slovakia has less than 5 and a half milion inhabittants and is fairly small.
