A poem about a man who has a broken heart and hides it well.
The captain of the guards
by William H. Lester
He arrives in all of his honor every morning at 5 a.m. in his old pick-up truck that he drives from his lonely personal quarters every morning and the captain of the guards is at home again.
He is the captain of the guards; he rules his prison farm with a rifle on his shoulder and a gun on his hip. His clothes is just a simple blue Shirt with blue jeans. He wears a white Cowboy hat that is sits on his head with his mirrored sunglasses that hides his sad lonely eyes caused by the many roads he traveled in his lonely sad life for his heart was broken so ago long by the woman he once loved.
He rides his horse in the fields as his men flock around him to trying win his favor to see which one will be his right hand man today. He watches the men from high on his horse and prays for God keep them from seeing his pain.
The captain of the guards is not as tough as he appears to be. He was once an ordinary boy with ordinary dreams, but she found him and broke his heart and taking all of his pride from him long ago when she left him for another. She brought him into this world and made him what he is today. Yes, it was a woman who made a Captain out of a simple kind country boy so long ago.
