This poem relates to the “Strange but True” posting I have done concerning the Chained Oak and Alton Towers theme park.
There is a tree that I have found,
where no branches touch the ground,
chains adorn it to this day,
to overcome a curse they say.
Along the Barbary Gutter,
where the Earl of Shrewsbury rode,
a woman begged for money,
or so the story goes.
The Earl dismissed the woman,
then went upon his way,
she placed a curse upon him,
which is active to this day.
According to the legend,
if a branch should fall and break,
a member of his family,
the curse will surely take.
Now the sands of time are passing,
and the woman’s long since died,
but the story lingers on,
at Altons theme park ride.
